Astolot was founded by Jennifer Cowan in 1998. After working with the public school realm for 12 years, Jennifer saw the need for small, personalized classes that fit individual needs. As the school has grown in size, the philosophy of Astolot has never changed.
Jennifer completed her Undergraduate Degree at Carleton with a major in Psychology. She then completed her Bachelor of Education at Queen's University where she specialized in Reading. After graduation, Jennifer attended the University of Waterloo where she acquired a specialization in literacy assessment of at-risk students. For six years Jennifer taught JK to grade two where she focused on literacy.
Jennifer then completed her Masters at the University of Ottawa. After 5 more years teaching grades five and six at the public school board she completed her principal qualifications. At this point she decided to open her own school in order to meet the individual needs of learners.
Jennifer applies her years of experience as a principal and a teacher to her students at Astolot. She provides a safe, inclusive environment at her school and believes that every student has the ability to succeed.
